Ronald Reagan famously stated people who agree with him 80% of the time are not his enemies. As usual, he was correct, but he never stated these 80%ers were not the enemy of good government or the American people.
The problem with an 80% friend or ally is when they practice their 20% voting differently they are automatically voting against you in a standard Congressional vote. One either votes for or against any given bill so you are either with me or against me. This gives the opposition a 120% turnout against your 80%. This is why minority opinions held and practiced by Democrats are the rule rather than the exception in governance.
We Republicans and Conservatives are dumbfounded how the Left/Democrats are able to push their agenda so successfully when they are the minority. Quite simply it is because they demand and receive 100% agreement and participation from their members, and they cherry pick a few Republicans on any given issue so even while they hold a minority in both houses of Congress, they enjoy a working majority on any given vote. When Democrats needed every one of their 60 members of the Senate to pass Obamacare, they got it. When Republicans needed 50 of their 54 members to vote to repeal it, they came up short.
Democrats have mastered “intersectionality.” Every member of their coalition has been trained to go along with any given opinion or initiative of their party regardless of whether it does or does not affect them, or even if it is adverse to their interests. Senator Chuck Schumer—the face of the Democrats and a man who lives in front of a podium doing press conferences or press releases and continually stating the Democrat position and why Republicans are wrong/evil/unAmerican etc.—could not be found when Democrats were pushing Obama’s Iran deal. The deal was clearly a horrible deal on every level and in particular for Israel, aka the “Little Satan,” whom one would expect Schumer to oppose on behalf of his Jewish constituents (including his family). But the biggest mouth in Congress was harder to find than a NAZI war criminal in Argentina during this process.
The mastering of “intersectionality” is what has allowed the Left to take over the Democrat Party, and beating the Republicans on most significant cultural votes is a matter of cherry-picking a few Republicans on any issue they are not 100% conservative. When the Democrats want to move toward amnesty and open borders, they write a bill with some assitance of Rubio or Graham and suddenly the press anounces the bi-partisan bill for “Dreamers.” When Democrats want to use tax money to help Planned Parenthood, a quick call to Collins will suit their needs. When Obamacare is facing the chopping block, the Democrat minions in the press call up John Kasich to tell America how he does not want to face St. Peter when he dies and have to explain why he denied healthcare to the poor.
Aside from Second Amendment supporters, the Republicans have no Democrats to call on for political assitance or cover. And any realist knows that the Democrats who “support” gun rights publicly today will reverse their vote once they have a majority. Remember their stance on gay marriage and illegal immigration? To paraphrase their former Presidential candidate “they were against it before they were for it”.So the Republicans must first enforce solidarity on their members. The first step must be to ensure every Republican must vote with the Party on cultural and economic policy. And in any case where their support cannot be attained they must agree to avoid the press on that issue (as did Schumer with on the Iran deal). No public disgreement is acceptable. Republicans must beat every Democrat and 95% of televised and print media on any given issue. Any public disagreement is seized upon by the press and internet trolls/bots of the Democrat Party to make our position seem unreasonable or extreme.Democrats never put themselves in this position. “Conservative” Democrats, such as Joe Manchin of West Virginia, very rarely vote with Republicans on anything and when they disgree with Democrat policy they don’t run for the cameras ala Graham and McCain. They keep thier head down and vote with the party. During the State of the Union speech when Manchin leapt to his feet to applaud something the President said, he quickly was cowed by his leadership and immediately slunk back into his seat. While it is sad to see Senators bullied by their leadership, it is sadder that the citizens of West Virginia are ultimately supporting Chuck Schumer, rather than having their views considered and discussed. But the Seventeenth Amendment is for another day.The second step is for Republicans to find Democrats who share some of their views or interests on specific issues and target them with bills designed to meet shared interests. Many Democrat Senators are sitting in “Red” states, and either using their common interests or exposing their party allegiance over their constituents opinions should be the priority of Republicans.
So an “80%” associate may not be my enemy, but Democrats have turned him into an enemy of my country and culture. So he actually is my enemy. He does not need to remain an enemy, but understanding the damage he does to our country must be publicized. The 80% crowd must be brought in line or removed. Senator Graham is a much more effective messenger for Democrats than Schumer. When Rubio supports amnesty and open borders, it is very damaging to America and the Republican Party. When Collins demands funding for Planned Parenthood, it leaves pro-life Republican members scratching our heads of why the majority party in Congress cannot stop funding abortions. It is time for elected Republicans to raise their grade from ‘B’ to ‘A+’…
