America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within.
Whether Stalin said exactly this or not is irrelevant, Communists understand that in order to hold power, they must become God. John Adams, in a speech to the military in 1798, warned his fellow countrymen that the frailty of a Free Republic required a self-disciplined populace.
We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion . . . Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
This week an estimated seventy million Catholics will begin Lent, a time of fasting and almsgiving. We have in our own ancient traditions these very powerful tools that help us to both govern ourselves while helping others, without the need for government studies or controls. New studies on fasting tout the benefits, from weight loss to improving mood. Biblical fasting offers more; a chance to not be self-absorbed, to think of your fellow citizen and participate in something money or the government cannot buy or promote. An inward journey of spiritual discovery and lasting joy.
Similarly, the act of almsgiving must be done freely or the spiritual journey cannot begin. St. Ambrose said, “For the man who has two shirts in his closet, one belongs to him; the other belongs to the man who has no shirt.” This is to remind us not to be indifferent to the poor and oppressed. When the state takes so much and redistributes it as they see fit, they deny the citizen the opportunity to spiritually grow and become strong. By taking so much through over-taxation and over-regulation, that a man cannot make the spiritual journey of giving to their fellow man, the Progressivist, Communist, Socialist succeeds in creating one step closer to crumbling the Free Republic.
Well said, Dr. Carson. Now well into the decades-long war against Progressivism, America has become like a boat—we are all stuck in it and seasick.
