Letter to Constituents

Dear Neighbor,

Delegate Jim LeMunyon (R, VA-67) (LeMunyon Photo)

There are four recent reports and announcements related to public education in Virginia that I’d like to call to your attention.

Revised Standards of Accreditation were issued by the Virginia Board of Education in November, and are found here. These changes received little reporting in the news, and are significant in that they modify the way schools are accredited based on SOL tests. The changes also relate to high school graduation requirements.

The Virginia Department of Education recently released a presentation regarding the important issue of teacher shortages in Virginia. To view this presentation, authored by Dr. Steven Staples and Dr. Luke Miller, please click here.

The Virginia Board of Education’s Annual Report on the Condition and Needs of Public Schools in Virginia was released on December 1, 2017, which may be found here.

Recommendations by the SOL Innovation Committee, on which I serve, were made in October to the Virginia Board of Education and the Governor. These may be found here. These recommendations consist of 12 proposals recommended from a total of 19. Those recommended are indicated by the word “advanced” as opposed to “not advanced.”
