Statement of House Republican Leadership on House District 94
Virginia House of Delegates Republican leaders Kirk Cox, Todd Gilbert, Tim Hugo, and Nick Rush released the following statement Tuesday on the results of the recount election in the 94th House District.
After a close recount it appears the citizens of the 94th District have elected Shelly Simonds to the Virginia House of Delegates, pending confirmation by a three judge panel. We congratulate Delegate-elect Simonds and welcome her to this historic body. We also thank Delegate David Yancey for his distinguished service.
The responsibilities of the House of Delegates as an institution transcend party labels, and our obligations to govern this Commonwealth remain. As we have said for the last six weeks, we are committed to leading and governing alongside our colleagues. We must balance the budget, grow our economy, improve our schools, and fight the opioid crisis, to name a few of the tasks before us
Before the work of governing on behalf of our constituents can begin, the House of Delegates as an institution must organize itself in accordance with the Constitution of Virginia, its Rules, and the body’s longstanding custom and practice. We stand ready to establish a bipartisan framework under which the House can operate efficiently and effectively over the next two years.
For the past 17 years, Republicans have led this historic chamber fairly and consistently. At the height of our majority, we maintained proportional representation, worked to improve transparency, and enacted even-handed Rules that were in the best interest of the institution. As we seek the framework under which the House will operate over the next two years, our commitment to these principles is unwavering.
