S. O. S. – SPEAKING OF SENIORS
By Woodrow Wilcox
On December 18, 2017, two clients visited me in the morning, and both of them had billing problems with Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
In the process of helping them, I learned that Mayo Clinic DOES NOT ACCEPT ASSIGNMENT OF CLAIMS with Medicare. For that reason, a senior citizen will pay more for going to Mayo Clinic than going to a medical firm that does accept assignment.
Not only will going to Mayo Clinic cost a senior more, the senior (or the ones helping the senior) will be hassled with extra paperwork. Because Mayo Clinic does not accept Medicare assignment, both Medicare and the Medicare supplement insurance company must send payment checks to the senior citizen patient instead of to Mayo Clinic directly. The senior will need to deposit the checks and write a check directly to Mayo Clinic to pay the bills.
Also, the senior citizen patient will have to pay up to 15% more for Mayo Clinic services than what would be covered if Mayo Clinic accepted assignment. The same problem would happen with any medical service provider who does not accept Medicare assignment. So, be sure to ask a doctor, hospital, or other service if it does accept Medicare assignment BEFORE YOU GET SERVICES THERE.
