S. O. S. – SPEAKING OF SENIORS
By Woodrow Wilcox
On December 7, 2017, I wrote a letter to a medical supplier to help them overcome some stupidity in the Medicare bureaucracy.
Medicare denied a claim for the monthly rental of a powered pressure reducing air mattress for our client to use in his home. Medicare had allowed the claim in each of the previous months that our client had used the device. But, the claim for the August rental fee was denied by Medicare.
Why? The claim was filed on a day in which the patient was in a hospital. The client did not feel well on July 31 and relatives took him to a hospital. He was in the hospital from July 31 to August 2. He continued using the medical device provided by the medical supplier when he returned home.
But, Medicare denied the claim for rental of medical device in August stating that Medicare Part B would not pay the rental since other information received by Medicare stated that the patient was in a hospital on August 1.
Here is the part that the Medicare officers and bureaucrats don’t seem to understand: a bill for a one month rental covers the month and is not limited to the date the claim is filed.
When people who are not smart enough to make perfect and practical rules and regulations think that they are and make ridiculous rules and regulations, people affected by that government bureaucracy get hurt. Who do you call for help if it is the government that is wrongfully hurting you?
