Recent conversations with some female friends have motivated me to write about my “call to action” for the men in this world:
LISTEN – don’t try to fix, or solve, or dissuade or minimize. Just listen to her, give her space to talk and vent or whatever she needs to do. Give her your shoulder if that’s helpful. Stay quiet and just be there. Just give her someone to talk to.
GOLDEN RULE – before you blatantly ogle or harass or aggressively try to pick up that next woman, think about the fact that she is someone’s daughter, someone’s sister, maybe someone’s mom. How would you want a man to treat your daughter, or sister, or mom? What kind of respect would you want them to show her? It’s totally fine to be attracted to someone … just try to display your attraction in a gentlemanly and courteous way.
TELL THE TRUTH – it’s scary, and it’s hard, but again, how would you want someone talking to your daughter or sister? Don’t tell her you are a race car driver if you are actually an accountant. Don’t leave out the fact that you have a child. Whatever the case may be, tell the truth. Be vulnerable. Let her know exactly what she is getting involved with, because she deserves that—and she’s going to find out soon enough anyway.
OPEN UP – as hard as it might be, reveal your feelings, and talk about them. This is actually attractive to anyone who is healthy and wants an engaged person who is in touch with themselves. You don’t have to cry (although, that’s a beautiful thing to allow yourself to do)—you just have to dig down deep enough to give her back the kind of emotional investment she is making.
Men in our society used to be expected to know poetry, learn to dance, and truly court a woman they were interested in. I believe the male energy in our world needs to be better balanced with the female, and I encourage any man who wants a more successful relationship with a woman to consider my words.
It’s not up to women to do any more evolving—they have done more than their fair share. It’s our job now, guys—it’s on us to change the dynamic and, dare I say, the world, by pushing ourselves to be better listeners, givers, truth-tellers.
Walk like a man. Talk like a man.
A real man.
