I was doing a radio show interview recently, and the host asked what advice I had for those who might be creating music but are afraid to share it.
It occurred to me that whatever is propelling us to do something—create a song, a painting, try a new job, move—whatever that voice is that may be whispering in our ear, is a voice to be listened to, and trusted.
Sometimes that’s all we have to go on, really. Just a faint whisper in our ear, that may seem utterly ridiculous, or terrifying. And yet it persists.
And the more we try to ignore it, ironically, the stronger that whisper becomes; the louder. The more powerful.
Until, actually, it is a roar as loud as the ocean, beckoning us, imploring us, to do it. To risk. To try. To believe.
Truly, we are such funny creatures. We appear in this world so mysteriously, so miraculously. There is such an unknown to life. And yet, we go about making our lives as predictable and safe as possible, eschewing any notion that magic plays a part in our daily existence.
I’m not saying it’s easy, because I can tell you from personal experience that it isn’t. Being out on a limb, shifting your life into a whole new paradigm, setting out on an entirely new course for yourself—it is truly brave and fantastic and scary and wondrous, and most of the people you know will not know how to support you. Some may even come right out and call you crazy.
So, I say, do it anyway. Paint that picture. Write that song. Quit that job. Move to that city.
Take that chance.
Follow that vision.
Listen to that whisper.
