Constitution MinuteWhen confederate statues were in the news, many predicted it would not be long before protestors started going after statues of our nation’s Founders. Well, it didn’t take long for attacks on symbols of the nation’s founding to start.
A statue of Francis Scott Key—who wrote the words to the Star-Spangled Banner—was vandalized with paint in Baltimore this week. In Charlottesville, student protesters at the University of Virginia covered the statue of Thomas Jefferson in black, and presented a list of demands ranging from affordable housing to ‘education for all.’ One demand was for a plaque to be added to the base of the statue denouncing Jefferson as a white supremacist and slave owner. Black Lives Matter, a group with well-documented communist roots, was involved.
Affordable housing? ‘Education for all’? What does Thomas Jefferson have to do with that? It doesn’t matter; any excuse to present a list of demands will do, apparently. For the Left, the issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.
Which is why I can’t take anything the Left says seriously. I know whatever they say is just a club they use to beat people up with. If they think they’re getting somewhere, they’ll keep using the club—in this case, the country was founded by slave owners and, as I’m hearing recently, every white is a white supremacist. That would include Mother Teresa, I suppose. The thing is, if the club stops working, the Left will pick up another club and go right on beating people. This is what the Left does, this is who they are.
Which is why constitutionalists should not give one inch when confronted with charges that the Constitution is racist and the founding of the country was flawed. Even saying something innocuous like ‘nothing is perfect’ plays right into the Left’s hands. So I’m more than happy to provide a brick wall when people need one. The country was founded by slave owners? I DON’T CARE. What’s that got to do with your rights under the Constitution today? NOTHING!
Better to say the protesters are benefitting from the patrimony the Founders left them, but just don’t want to admit it. You don’t see the protesters demanding we throw out the First Amendment which guarantees their right to protest, do you? Thomas Jefferson created U.Va. out of nothing. Without him, these students wouldn’t be getting a college degree from a nationally ranked university. You don’t see them having the courage of their convictions and enrolling somewhere else, do you? However far they go in life, they will have the slave owner, racist, and rapist Thomas Jefferson to thank for it. They’re standing on his shoulders and won’t get off. They should just start paying reparations now.Jefferson did bad things? So what? William Jefferson Clinton did a lot of bad things with women. You don’t see the Left disowning him, do you? Franklin Roosevelt imprisoned Japanese-Americans just for being Japanese. Get back to me after you have removed the FDR Memorial from the National Mall. By the way, it is said there are more slaves today than in Jefferson’s time. What are you doing, personally, to end modern-day slavery if you’re so upset about it?
My Alexandria Tea Party handed out Constitutions at the subway for Constitution Week. The high point for me was the black or mixed race guy who was quite knowledgeable about the Constitution and very concerned about Metro recently claiming the power to inspect adjacent properties without a warrant. He was worried that the Fourth Amendment and other constitutional protections are going away. Bingo! That’s what I’m trying to get across. The Constitution isn’t just for white people; it’s for everybody who loves their freedom and their individual rights—today.
So when the Left pulls out its ‘Constitution is racist’ club and starts beating us up with it, we need to systematically fire back or, as the man I met at the Metro fears, our Constitution really will go away, and it won’t take very long.
Which is why we need to stop accepting the way our opponents frame things and put THEM on the defensive for once, with one simple question: If you succeed in tearing everything down—the Constitution included—what are you going to replace it with, exactly? I guarantee they won’t be able to answer the question with any degree of specificity. That’s because, if truth be told, the issue is never the issue, the issue is always empowering a tiny elite to take over—exactly what our Founders warned us against. Why the useful idiots on the Left would want that to happen is beyond me, but that’s the game they’re playing, plain as day.

Editor’s Note. Superb assessment here. Americans of all stripes should rightfully be proud of their extraordinary Constitution and the revolutionary contribution it has made not only to their quality of life but for the advancement of civilization. The attacks and violence targeted against statues and other icons honoring the Constitution and its framers reveal a complete misunderstanding of history and lack of confidence by those who know not the foundations of their culture. A sad commentary about too many Americans today and the education system that has failed them.
