Letter from Virginians for Quality Healthcare (VQH) to senators who voted NO to repeal of Obamacare
17 August 2017
Honorable Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV)
Honorable Susan M. Collins (R-ME)
Honorable Dean Heller (R-NV)
Honorable Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
Honorable John McCain (R-AZ)
Honorable Lisa Murkowski (R_AK)
Honorable Rob Portman (R-OH)
United States Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
It was with extreme disappointment that we watched you vote “NO” to the repeal of Obamacare. For six long years your Party campaigned on repealing this social disaster imposed on us by Democrats, and Democrats alone, and begged to be voted into control of the House and then the Senate. Now that Republicans control both chambers AND the White House, you seven Republican naysayers have shown the public how unprincipled elected officials can be; your vote against the “Obamacare Repeal Reconciliation Act of 2017” utterly betrayed the public’s trust.
In 2015, the Republicans sent a repeal bill to then-President Obama knowing it would fail because he would veto it. Six of you voted for that bill. But, when given the opportunity in 2017 to deliver on your Party’s promise, you choked and gave in to bullying and coercion from hospital and insurance lobbyists, special interests, and the Democrats. Your six “flip-flop” votes signaled contempt for the American people who have suffered long enough under Obamacare. Senator Collins and Senator Murkowski, millions of citizens noted that you couldn’t even support a Motion to Proceed on debate of the American Health Care Act last month. We see now that all your demands for repeal were insincere, and meant to impress your supporters but nothing more.
We the People are not impressed, and we will remember this when you next run. You seven, the Gang of No as Senator McCain would probably like to call yourselves, have crystallized the case for term limits to the American public. For now you have managed to expose the Republican Party to criticism as the Party of grandiose talk, broken promises, and cronyism. Americans deeply distrust “establishment Republicans” such as yourselves who are obstructing President Trump’s agenda and selling out your constituents, as well as all the hard-working citizens of the United States.
It is time for the Senate majority to support President Trump, and honor the promises your Party made to repeal Obamacare. We ask you to ensure a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act; allow states once again to regulate their health insurance markets, and let individuals make their own health care decisions, in a free enterprise system, without any government interference.
