Letter to Constituents on August 1, 2017
The Virginia Sales Tax Holiday/Tax Free Weekend is Friday, August 4th through Sunday, August 6th. This combined sales tax holiday incorporates three previous tax holidays—back to school (August), hurricane and emergency preparedness (May), and Energy Star and WaterSense (October) into one combined sales tax holiday. During these three days, certain school supplies, emergency and energy-efficient items, and clothing and footwear will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax.
To view a full list of the items that are included in the sales tax holiday, along with guidelines and frequently asked questions for both consumers and retailers, please click here.
Whether or not you you have children in school, you can help students who can’t afford school supplies. In Fairfax, a non-profit organization, Collect for Kids, has teamed with several other organizations to accept donations of backpacks. In Western Fairfax, the drop off location is Western Fairfax Christian Ministries, which helps people in need regardless of religious affiliation. More information about this and many other opportunities may be found here.
Many supermarkets are also collecting school supplies, so look for opportunities for donate there as well.
