Virginia Officials to Celebrate Completion of U.S. Route 1 Widening August 2
Virginia officials will be celebrating the completion of the U.S. Route 1 widening project on August 2, 2017, at 11:00 AM. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, in cooperation with Fairfax County, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Belvoir, and the Virginia Department of Transportation, implemented the approximately 3.6-mile-long road improvement project between Jeff Todd Way and Telegraph Road. The project includes widening the corridor from four to six lanes, signalization upgrades, new turn lanes, a median able to accommodate future bus rapid transit (BRT), and mitigation of numerous adjacent cultural and natural resources. The project provides traffic congestion relief for travelers along U.S. Route 1 and improved access from I-95 and the Fairfax County Parkway to Fort Belvoir.
