By Paul BolonPresident Trump knows that there was no collusion with Russia because he either did not speak with a Russian official during the long campaign of the Republican primary and general election. Or, if he did speak with a Russian official, there was no talk of the U.S. Presidential election campaign. That would be treason, and Donald Trump may be a man of a number of weaknesses or flaws, but he is not a traitor. He knows this, and his supporters know this.
Moreover, President Trump has said publicly and repeatedly that he is innocent of any involvement or collusion with Russia concerning the election. So, underlying the ongoing efforts by Democrat politicians—Schiff, Schumer, Pelosi, Perez—and Democrat media—New York Times, NBC, Washington Post, CNN, MSNBC, etc.—to connect Trump with Russia in undermining the election is also an implicit assertion that President Trump is lying. It’s always there.
Democrats and the Democrat media think or feel that President Trump is evil and corrupt. So, for them, it is a small step, too quickly and easily taken, that he is also lying about colluding with the Russians. If angry feelings manufactured facts, they would have a bushel full. But anger and emotion can also blind one to actual facts.
If President Trump is innocent of collusion, then Democrat media have created and published fake news—news stories based on innuendo and circumstantial tidbits without real facts. I would say that they simply set out to destroy President Trump by consciously smearing him, but in the parlance of today we say fake news. Why did it happen? That is a long story about Democrats and the progressive mentality. Let’s not be their psychoanalyst; which, in politics, translates to the familiar truism that when your political opponents are flailing, just let them be.
So, that is the situation we are in. Trump and his supporters know he is innocent of the collusion accusations, while Democrats and Democrat media incorrectly have leapt to a conclusion that he is guilty. And this has been going on since November, with almost daily Democrat media headlines breathlessly providing circumstantial “facts” from un-named sources, ones that would be consistent with the collusion theory. James Comey’s testimony debunked one of the primary “facts” offered up by the New York Times, reportedly based on four un-named sources, that the Trump campaign had “many” contacts with Russian officials and that the investigation of General Flynn involves either the President or the Trump campaign.Last week when recently fired FBI Director James Comey testified before a Senate committee, he acknowledged that President Trump was not being investigated (and yes CNN and NYT, Comey had told him so) and that there was to date no evidence of Trump or Republican collusion with Russian authorities to undermine the Presidential election. The absence of any evidence of collusion has also been publicly stated by other former intelligence officials.
The daily pounding by Democrat media of Trump’s guilt has achieved one result: a large majority of Democrats believe, according to polling, that candidate Trump colluded with the Russians to influence our Presidential election. A majority of Democrats also believe that states’ vote count or electoral mechanisms were hacked. And, of course, it follows that the election was stolen. The New York Times referred to the “stolen” election in its open letter to the Deputy Attorney General urging him to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Trump-Russian collusion.
What is going to happen with the dust finally settles and President Trump is found innocent? This will be a shattering moment for Democrats and Democrat media, because it will lay bare that, in fact, they are the ones who have been deceiving the American public, and particularly gullible Democrats. Many Democrats will never change their minds of Trump’s guilt, just as they hold false beliefs about Bush lying on Iraq, for instance. Another instance of left media saturating their base with a false story.
What I notice with my personal friends who are Democrats, is that they have fallen silent about politics. All of those outrageous scandals by Trump against the republic … aren’t so pressing any more.
The whoosh of the air going out of that giant Trump collusion dirigible began as soon as Comey was finished testifying. Some, like MSNBC’s Chris Mathews, are already covering their reputations, saying gee whiz, I guess there is no story there. Wasn’t he also a peddler of the collusion narrative?
Others have doubled down. The New York Times’ headline the next morning said that President Trump had tried to “sink the inquiry.” Why this pivot and takeaway from the hearings? Because the main theme of collusion had burst. But, hey, maybe we can pin an obstruction of justice on him—not the crime, you know, but the cover-up. Good luck with that. Note to Democrat media: when you know you are innocent of a crime, you don’t think to bother about participating in a cover-up of same. CNN has also shifted to the narrower faux scandal of obstruction. What are they gonna do? Admit to your viewers you were wrong?
But Democrats and their media are reeling. In the movie Red October, in his zeal to destroy a defecting submarine, a Russian attack sub captain arms his torpedoes early.
Eventually, one of the torpedoes re-acquires the attack sub itself as its new target, and the Russian succeeds only in blowing himself up. The attack sub today is the Democrat media, and the question is, What will be the ultimate effects of such a blast to their credibility? The political torpedo may also re-acquire other Democrat targets: Loretta Lynch; the extensive surveillance and illegal unmasking of Trump campaign figures by Obama officials; and James Comey himself.
Democrat politicians are pivoting away by exclaiming that they were really just interested in Russian interference in the election, not just getting Trump. Isn’t that something we should all care about? I’m just a patriot.
The left’s ultimate target, and the only critical one to bringing down Trump, is Trump supporters. So far, the Democrat media has only succeeded in keeping the Democrat base hyper-excited. Once upon a time, if the Democrat media became exercised about an issue, it mattered. Everyone felt the gravity of it. But no longer. The gambit of the stolen election/collusion narrative to take Trump out will leave regular Democrats feeling a bit … queasy, maybe even that sinking feeling. And that fake news label may seem quite a bit more deserved.
After the November election, the publisher of the New York Times wrote a letter to Times’ readers. It was a kind of an apology, but vague—clearly something had gone awry. It seemed to promise to do something different. Better journalism? Not being so blind? Now look at this mess.
