By now, everybody knows what a sanctuary city is, but in case you’ve just dropped in from Mars I will explain. When a city or county’s leaders instruct its police to not detain illegal aliens when encountered so that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agents can pick them up and start deportation proceedings, that city/county is a “sanctuary.” When a city’s or county’s jail system either will not notify ICE of the pending release of an illegal alien or will not honor a detainer placed on that illegal alien by ICE, that is a sanctuary city/county.Poor beautiful and now dead Kate Steinle was minding her own business one night when she was shot in the back while walking with her father along San Francisco’s Pier 14 on July 1, 2015. The murderer, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, is an illegal alien who had been deported from the United States FIVE TIMES but entered again, illegally, a sixth time. Now, we may get a law, aptly titled “Kate’s Law,” that would impose mandatory jail time for expelled illegals who reenter the US illegally. Kate will still be dead, however. Now a judge named Joseph Spero in San Francisco has decided that the Steinles can sue the federal government for negligence because the murder weapon had been stolen from a Bureau of Land Management officer’s personal vehicle. However, this lame brain judge also ruled the Steinles cannot sue the City of San Francisco whose unlawful policies allowed the murderer to be there in the first place.
Also in San Francisco, America’s first (?) and most notorious sanctuary city, Anthony Bologna and his sons, Michael and Matthew, were murdered on June 22, 2008 and another son was critically injured on their way home from a barbeque. The killer was an illegal alien named Edwin Umaña Ramos, born in El Salvador in 1986, who was a member of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang. As a teenager, Ramos was twice convicted of violent crimes but was not deported. A week after the murder of the Bolognas, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom (now Lt. Governor of California) amended that sanctuary city’s policy to allow the city to refer juvenile illegal immigrant felons to federal authorities for deportation. However, the victims are still dead and Tony’s widow, Danielle, now has no husband, lost two sons, and has a shattered life. Put yourself in her place for 10 seconds. Not easy, is it? But thanks, Gavin!
There are thousands more examples of illegal aliens killing Americans … and each other … but you get the picture. So what do cities like San Francisco, Baltimore, New York, Newark, Austin, and about 300 more have in common? Democrats are in charge. Why do they establish sanctuary cities? In the expectation that, eventually, illegals will receive amnesty and that they and their families will vote for Democrats in perpetuity out of gratitude. Donna Brazile, interim chairperson of the Democrat National Committee (DNC), said so herself. When asked about her feelings regarding the possibility of granting amnesty to illegals in exchange for their NEVER being allowed to vote in an American election, she stated she could not envision two classes of American citizens. In other words, amnesty would mean a new voting block of 40 million (it’s not 11 million like you hear all the time) Democrat voters. By the way, Ms. Brazile was “suspended” by CNN during this past election season for leaking debate questions to her candidate, Hillary Clinton. Think about that: CNN, derisively called “the Clinton News Network” by some, firing a high level Clinton operative for cheating. We’ve just redefined irony.
My question is, where do American citizens go for sanctuary? Is there any city in America that shields us from illegals? Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, AZ, tried his best to protect America and its citizens from the scourge of illegal aliens but was told he had no right to do so because only the federal government can enforce immigration law. So why did Barack Obama instruct Jeh Johnson, the head of the Department of Homeland Security (talk about a misnomer!), to turn Border Patrol Agents into babysitters for illegal alien kids coming across our southern border? Why did Johnson NOT enforce established immigration law against sanctuary cities and counties? See the paragraph immediately above.Change is afoot, however, as President Trump (I like the sound of that) has nominated no-nonsense John Kelly, a retired US Marine Corps General, to be the next Secretary of DHS. He promises to actually enforce our laws as our not-gone-soon-enough current President would not, in violation of his oath of office.
In addition, Governor Greg Abbot of Texas has announced he expects his State’s legislature to pass an anti-sanctuary city bill this year. When passed, violating cities/counties/universities would face financial penalties and their leaders removal from office. That’s how it’s done.
And now, Mexico’s new foreign relations secretary, Luis Videgaray, has announced that he is willing to negotiate Trump’s plan to build a border wall but also said Mexico won’t pay for the wall. Not yet, anyway. I am sure now that Mexico’s financial markets are in shambles, with their currency (the peso) crashing by 13 percent since Donald Trump was elected, that Mexico’s leaders will be paying closer attention to what he is saying and might be more inclined to cooperate by stopping illegals, who now transit through Mexico into the U.S., at Mexico’s border with Guatemala and Belize.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform estimated, three years ago when there were fewer illegal aliens here, that illegal immigration costs the federal government almost $29 billion and state/local governments about $84 billion … per year!
Enough, already. January 20th, 2017 can’t come soon enough.
