Of course, once in school minimum standards had to be met. Since so many were not really college material, the courses of study could not be that difficult or the whole draft avoidance strategy would be defeated by failing out. Draft boards did watch. So, the trick was to get into as easy a curriculm as possible. Ergo, the explosion in “ed” (education) majors, journalism majors, and, for the smarter ones, prelaw majors. All these professions are based on words, i.e., talking/writing, rather than on deeds. About 40 years later, those graduates are in middle and upper management in their fields: education, media, and law. Is it any wonder that those fields are dominated by the far left?
The people that marched, demonstrated, and took over/trashed school offices and buildings in the name of “free speech” are now the same people who will not tolerate any free speech that doesn’t mirror their own views. Their free speech was an exercise in democracy; today’s conservatives’ attempts to have the same right to free speech cannot be tolerated and must be squashed—it’s simply too dangerous to their existence. How many “Black Studies,” “Women’s Studies,” and other programs of similar drivel can hold any water under the most cursory scrutiny. Of course, we know and they know the answer is that none can. However, like most people who begin aging and may be grandparents, they have become accustomed to a certain standard of living/comfort and will not have that jeopardized by some young punks making a stink about something or other. The sobering effect of maturity has turned yesteryear’s radicals into today’s establishment on campus. Talk about irony! That establishment is at least as bad as the establishment that those radicals managed to dethrone unceremoniously with unending sit-ins, takeovers, and good old fashioned ridicule. Now, these folks (Ward Churchill, etc.) realize that they were marginal talents at best who built reputations not on scholarship but on bluster, noise, and connections. They know that they could easily be exposed as the mental lightweights they are if opposing viewpoints are given a forum. Therefore, obviously, they will prevent such a forum with all the strength they can muster. The least capable among us demand a captive audience to give them the illusion of importance and intelligence. College provides exactly the right environment. Young students don’t know any better so adults (aging hippies, mostly) giving it to them straight seems like an exhilarating experience, especially when those adults often think and act like the children they are teaching. Better still, colleges are now echo chambers for the left where never is heard a discouraging (or a disparate) word. Every day is an intellectually back patting day where the “professors” and administrators, themselves former “professors,” continually validate each other because to do otherwise would jeopardize their own fantasy worlds where up is down, in is out, men and women are the same, there is no good or bad (just choices), homosexuality is just an alternative lifestyle, AIDS is as much a concern to “straight” society as it is to the gay community, war is never the answer (tell that to the French who would be speaking German today but for a war), that racism is evil unless that racism is against whites and Asians (Affirmative Action), etc. And then to get paid for talking and little else … Wow! Where can I get this gig?
So, conservative students, it’s not that you are out of the mainstream but you are swimming in someone else’s river and the local fish hate you because you make them uncomfortable with your “extreme” (this used to be called “radical” and was worn as a badge of honor by those calling you extreme today) views about basic fairness, by your belief in God, and most of all by your willingness to confront today’s campus establishment. So, you see, what’s good for the 60’s goose is not so good for today’s gander. It has become “Do what I say, not what I do (or did).” We used to call that abject hypocrisy. Today it’s called political correctness. Kudos to you for your courage and know this: you are NOT right wing nuts outside the mainstream, you merely live in an asylums for aging, scared, angry bohemian draft dodgers that more resemble freakshows than schools. You have my sympathy, my support, and my blessings as you try to reclaim our establishments of higher learning that have devolved into factories of liberal automatons with meaningless four-year attendance certificates. Godspeed.
