Trouble is that Trump is up against the establishment politicians in Congress who continually obfuscate and bend reality to suit their own purposes.
The Affordable Care Act was foisted on hard-working American taxpayers by Democrats who embedded new taxes into their “need to pass it to know what’s in it” federal give away program. The whole thing was propped up like a Ponzi scheme using subsidies, fees, federal mandates, unmentioned (but much anticipated) premium increases, and promises to the insurers, all of which was destined to eventually implode after Obama left office. What this Democrat trickery, aided by the cover of the compliant liberal media, has left us with is a nice greasy piece of government “pork,” so slippery that the Republicans can’t seem to handle it.
It is somewhat amusing to watch the establishment Republicans tying themselves into knots, attempting to deal with that increasingly rancid government morsel but without appearing to take away what was to be a government hand-out. So far, the Republican proposals don’t touch the parts of Obamacare ostensibly intended to give free health insurance to Democrat voters. The Republicans are faced with pressure from the President and from Conservatives to “repeal and replace” the ACA, while still trying to get reelected in 2018. The latest trickery on their side of the aisle is to nibble at the edges of Obama care, eliminating the mandate, giving more discretionary power to the states, etc., while retaining the core element of subsidies through hidden taxation. These are understandably difficult waters to navigate given that the gleeful, teary-eyed Democrats can’t wait to tar and feather the “heartless” Republicans for ripping away free healthcare from Democrat voters. “Oh, the humanity!”It appears that only the Freedom Caucus and true Conservatives have had the intelligence to see through the trickery on both sides, and have demonstrated enough moxie to push back aggressively against the establishment. Conservatives rightly continue to demand that all major tenets of Obamacare be dismantled, but this calls for new approaches to the problem.
One way for establishment Republicans to get out of their dilemma might be to turn to something as basic as the truth. They could start by openly identifying and separating out the health care subsidies, penalties, and premium increases … essentially the hidden “taxes” identified by the U.S. Supreme Court that were embedded in the ACA and imposed strictly by the Democrats. The next step is to do something totally anti-establishment … declare those taxes optional for tax payers in the new healthcare law. It’s been done before, just look at the donation box for Presidential Elections on your 1040 form.
Starting in 2018, every taxpayer could choose if they wanted to pay that piece of federal tax intended to provide for someone else’s health care. Whatever healthcare taxes might be donated (by all those kind-hearted liberals) could then be divvied up and sent in equal portions to the states to be used as each state decided for healthcare purposes. Democrats running for office in 2018 would then be faced with their own dilemma: either support the new law or campaign on that tried and true Democrat platform of mandating and raising more taxes on hard-working Americans. That is the essential truth behind the issue. For the sake of all hard-working American taxpayers I hope the Freedom Caucus and true Conservatives win out over more establishment trickery.
