Dear Delegate Vivian Watts,
As your constituent and a Fairfax County Election Officer, I was stunned to hear that that you voted against three common sense bills that will help improve the integrity of our elections in the Commonwealth (See below).
- HB 2343 Voter registration list maintenance; voters identified as having duplicate registrations.
- HB 1598 Voter registration; proof of citizenship required to register to vote in certain elections.
- HB 1428 Absentee voting; photo identification required with application.
Why would you vote against common sense Bills that will help reduce fraud?
Is it not true that Virginians can obtain Voter Identification cards for a de minimis fee at the DMV?
Do you support anyone showing up to vote on Election Day regardless of having any ID or even legal status?
I hope your actions were an anomaly and that you will support such important legislation to protect the integrity of our elections going forward.
Your constituents are watching closely.
Hugh Iwanicki, CPA
Editor’s Note: Readers can find out how their Delegates and State Senators vote on bills during the 2017 General Assembly session by going to Virginia’s Legislative Information System and searching by the bill number. Mr. Iwanicki’s letter serves as a good template for presenting comments to your representative(s).
