It’s been nearly a year since VDOT opened the Interstate 66 shoulder “X” lanes to traffic anytime the road is congested between the Rt. 50 intersection and the Beltway. Previously, these lanes were open only during peak traffic periods from Monday through Friday. Additionally, VDOT has placed signs over each lane that can be used occasionally to specify a speed limit less than 55 m.p.h. The purpose of the overhead signs is to keep traffic flowing, but at a lower speed, to avoid sudden backups and reduce congestion.
I would like to hear your thoughts on how this system is working out and if you feel it is reducing traffic congestion. Please click on this link to take our short survey.
I plan to post the results on my website in the near future. If you have any comments on questions on I-66 or any other matter, please feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org or (703) 264-1432.
