Letter to the Editor
Yes, there is a Grinch who stole Christmas. However, here in Virginia the Grinch is Prince William County.
Did you know the Prince William Landfill is the Largest Man-Made Structure in Prince William County?
From research from the former Attorney General’s office of Mr. Cuccinelli and current Mr. Herring and two years of research, I have determined that Prince William County has been illegally taxing every resident in P.W. County for over 14 years, which comes to an annual amount over $60 million.
A random survey of the residents in Prince William County revealed that less than 65% of the residents NEVER visit the landfill. Another 15% of the county visit it less than three times a year, and a minimum of 10% visit monthly.
However, the solid waste division chief claims that this is not a tax but it is a “Legal FEE.” The problem is they have been taxing you every year as a “FEE,” not a TAX. The definition of a FEE is something that you want to do, say pay the trash company to pick up your trash or say pay for a movie. If you don’t want your trash picked up or you don’t want to go to a movie, you DON’T HAVE TO PAY!
This illegal taxation is what the Prince William County government wants to perpetuate.
FACTS: The laws of Virginia require that individual counties apply to the Richmond state office of the Attorney General for approval to tax individuals within a county. Also, counties are required with this application/approval to have a vote by citizens on the proposed tax before it can be implemented.
The Cirtuit Court of any county is not allowed to impose a tax or fee, whatever, on the residents a County, which is what Prince William County has done.
In this instance Prince William County added to YOUR county taxes without requesting County residents approve this program. This “tax,” originated 15 years ago, was approximately $25 a month. It has now increased to over $70 a month. Now, with County interest in taxing county residents even more this tax, again which they call a fee, is now rumored to increase to over $125 a month, again illegally.
This summer P.W. County guaranteed a Hawaiian surfboard company $4 million to research businesses that can deliver Waste to Energy. Sorry, this will require another $65 million and two years to build, BOTH of which will be paid from your FEES!, and this company has no history or certification of a Waste to Energy business.
FACTS: Prince William County has historically given trash companies a free delivery to the landfill by not charging them a fee to drop off your trash and business trash at our landfill. The landfill is now reeiving trash from Fairfax, Stafford, and Frederick counties in excess of hundreds of tons a week.
My company works with over 36 county landfills in Virginia to help them remediate their landfills. “Every” county, including Richmond City, Henrico County, and even Fairfax County, require trash companies, who literally own the trash when they take it from YOUR homes, to pay a “tipping fee” at the landfill when they dump their trash. Prince William County is one of the only counties in the entire state that is giving these trash companies a free tipping fee. There is no concern as to the expenses needed to keep the landfill running. After all, they can aways tax us residents some more – which they will do!
My request to the residents of Prince William county is to contact your regional County Councilman or Supervisor and request this illegal taxation process be stopped. AND demand a refund of these illegal payments you have been paying over 15 years.
